We need to teach the newbies or we will have no fun!

Hi,

i think we need some real training-games for the newbies. Most of that training-games we have played, ended with a stupid resign because one team stacked.
I think, the basic things to teach first are:

1. They have to listen to the commander (if they ignore too much commands, they should get bootet, maybe they learn then)

2. Scouting the map and probe it up (attack/rush cons later!)

3. Defend bases:
3.1 stop bombruns by killing scouts first
3.2 work as a team (no single attacks)
3.3 camping alephs (maybe, mining alephs up too)

4. nan or gun on a bombrun (not to many nans)

If the newbies that known, i think we will have more fun in the normal games.

How can we teach:

1. Both teams need a vet as commander

2. Its not importent to win the game, so no forward expand to take He3 or do bomb runs!

3. if there more vets:
3.1 even vets on each team!
3.2 the vets stay in base and help newbies to find the alephs from commandview (f3). Tell them where they should probe. Coordinate the bomb runs and and the defend later.

4. Dont upgrade any base and go all techtrees (no sy)
The newbies need to know the differents between interceptor, fighter and stealhfighter on defend.

5. If the map is scouted & probed and some enemy bases found we can start to train bomb runs.
5.1 the first time the bomber should only fly by a vet.
5.2 Attack bases, fire shields and hull down but DONT destroy the bases (special the techbases!)
5.2.1 if the station hull fired down, rip back and start a new run. The other team has to kill the bomber first to start their own bomb run!
5.2.2 if your bomb run failed, get back in base and expect an bombrun from the other team.

6. Defend:
6.1 vets stay in base and teach them to defend. Only the newbies try to defend.
6.2 dont forget to reprobe if needed

7. special for the commanders: if a vet of ur team get bored and begin to start defend, kill bases... BOOT HIM!!!

If the newbies can defend and nan on bomb runs we will have more fun:)

Make sure they have fun. Set a time for noob training, I think they will come. Me too.

What I've been doing all along: Always have an eye on newbies. If I see them do something stupid I PM them with some specific advice.

As a commander I give out specific commands to newbies as well. Some listen, some won't. Sometimes I even boot newbies if they do thinhs outrightly wrong AND won't listen (like moving around my consts etc.). It's also a lesson they got to learn.

I've already seen a few people improve quite a bit in the last couple of weeks. I just hope there will be MORE newbies. And people will treat them nicely.

I don't know if training is really useful for real newbies. I'd prefer them gaining experience ingame and once they reach a certain skill level we can hone their skills in specific training sessions. The basics are all at the Academy. I expect people to be able to read.

The newbie tags really help identifying the ones in need.

I am usually very nice to the ones who I believe are actual newbies.
They ask a question, I'll answer it if I can. If I dont know, I tell them the best likely place or person to find the answer.

I know when I was a newbie, the only person who helped me was Globe when it comes to gameplay, otherwise, I might not have stuck around for as long as I have. Many veterans were very mean to newbies back then....much more than nowdays
I remember Nast banning me on site for about a month (and is really the reason I have so many callsigns :D )...It finally got so bad, I had to complain to Spunky, and he talk to Nast. Since then, Nast has been much more calm about personal vendettas, not only to me, to others as well.
But the fact is, many vets (not just Nast) were unreasonably tough on newbies. There are still a handful of short-sighted, self-centered people who play this game....and they will never truely be kind to the new people, they see newbies as easy kills or simply in the way.

This is why I try to be kind to the newer people. I greet them by name when I see them (this alone helps a huge amount....Just to ackowledge a persons' existance = a feeling of acceptance....which makes any person feel good  )  Basic psycology my friends. You want these people to stay? It's not that difficult.

Training? Gimmie a time and place and I'll be there if I am able.
If there are special tactics that can be practiced (by squad)into lethal threats against our opponents...I am all for that.
Most of the really exciting (as comm) decisions I have made are usually spontaneous and only planned in minutes, re-acting to what my opponent is doing (much like how I play chess  ), biding my time untill I see a weakness...then having the money and means to carry thru any oppertunity to give my team an advantage. Most of this is in terms of placing cons. It's alot like chess, actually.
But anyways....if there are any ideas that someone may have, let us get together to train, or perhaps just the basics too.

I've rambled enough and I gotta go towork...cya ya'll

Am i alowed to boot a noob if i tell him to do something nicely....then tell him again...and again...and again...and again....and again....and again ?

Creeping_Death

Air- I have no authority to "tell" you what to do, but I would ask you not to boot newbies plz.

The only 2 different scenerios where I may boot a newbie is if they stop donating...they acknowledge that they stopped donating...and refuse to re-donate to the commander. The 2nd would be if they are being overly hostile or beligerant out of malice to the commander or teamates, and maybe even to the opponent too. The 2nd also falls into if they spam resign when not agreed to by the commander or if they secretly attempt to mutiny.....note #2 is less like a newbie and more like a vet or semi-vet.
There have been times where I did not boot a newbie when they stop invest, but there have been times where I have too. I would also like to note an observation: The majority of those who are booted without being told why, or those who are booted who never respond.....rarely return, if they do, it's not for long....maybe two weeks, tops. :(
So, knowing this....I try not to boot a newbie at all.

Dont boot a newbie if you give a specific task and he fails to carry it out as far as "defend this...", or, "pick this up..."
I just let them fly around and check out all the different things there are to learn. If they ask me for a task, I'll give them one, but with minimal responsibility, that way, if they happen to mess it up, they dont feel so bad, and at the same time, it's not too crucial to the team or the game.

You know me Air...I can talk forever :D
I'll stop right here...

Well, we could try - again. Didn't work out too well though when we tired it about a year or so ago.
But I'm absolutely pro-practice!
We will have to work out some topics first.

This would be an appropriate time for our fearless leader(s), to schedule some practice sessions.  :P

During the week, I am usually available 6AM-10AM GMT (10PM-2AM my time).  On the weekends, the best times are 9PM-2AM GMT (1PM-6PM my time).

Grimmwolf
